Yaounde, Cameroon Africa. (Cameroon News) – The Bakassi FM Community Radio, broadcasting on frequency FM 95.0 donated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), went operational on February 2, 2012 in Isangele.
The radio reported to be received in all the Subdivisions of the Bakassi Peninsula, the Ndian Divisional headquarters, Mundemba and Akwa-Ibom in Nigeria, was sponsored by the Japanese government at the cost of 200, 000 US Dollars (about FCFA 10 million).
The Ndian Senior Divisional Officer, Peter Tieh Nde, chairing the event on behalf of the Minister of Communication, Issa Tchiroma Bakary, said President Paul Biya requested for a radio in Bakassi when the then Director General of UNESCO, Koichiro Matsura visited Cameroon in 2009.
He said the radio and the multimedia centre that has nine computers were in line with government policy of addressing the information and communication needs of Cameroonians.
“Own the radio. Take it as the property of the State of Cameroon,” Peter Tieh Nde told the Bakassi people.
He called on the three technicians and six animators to exercise professionalism by broadcasting people-oriented programmes, promising government’s unflinching support.
Benoit Sossou, the UNESCO Representative in Cameroon, said the radio will broadcast information on health and other development related issues, stating that it will relay Cameroon Radio Television (CRTV).
He described the radio as a unifying factor, reiterating that it belongs to all Subdivisions of the Bakassi Peninsula.
Benoit Sossou while promising UNESCO’s continuous support, called on the staff to work in close collaboration with the management committee.
The multimedia component of the radio, he said, will stimulate development in the area.
