Mr Labidi Barhoumi stated that “A technical centre for wood industry will help small and medium-sized industries to develop the production of wood manufactured in Cameroon”.

Officials of the Chamber of Agriculture, Livestock and Forest of Cameroon led by its President Janvier Mongui Sossomba and those of the Tunisian Centre on Monday, June 13 had discussions in Yaounde on financial and technical assistance, identification of partner institutions to the project and also visited the Binguela Farming Practical School where the centre will be set up.

The industrial wood processing centre will promote research and prevent the random failing of trees and sale of Cameroonian timber, officials say.

The Tunisian Technical Industrial Centre for Wood and Furniture was set up in 1996 to give financial and technical support to small and medium-sized enterprises in the wood sector.

It is equipped with laboratories for analysis to establish norms in the manufacture of household and office equipment.

Reports say the wood sector in Tunisia has some 770 enterprises that recruit over 100,000 workers and their products fetch millions of money in the European markets.

Tunisia has not forest and imports over 95 percent of timber from Europe. Over 41.2 percent of Cameroon land is covered by forest but the country still imports wood products.
