The International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission has expressed their serious concerns regarding the recent controversy that has been causing a lot of violence towards gay rights activists as well as LGBT population in the country.

They have expressed their genuine worries about the threats that the anti gay groups as well as the government has been issuing towards people who support gay rights in the country.

The organization said that Alice Nkom, chairperson of the Association for the Defense of Homosexuality, is being regularly issued threats of detention and jailing by government officers and has also been a victim of several violent attacks from various strata of society who are against the rehabilitation of the LGBT community.

Nkom and her allies have been facing threats form anti gay rights groups fo quite awhile but the mental and physical torture has been on an increase ever since the grant issued by the European Union for 300,000 Euros to the organization for rehabilitation of the LGBT population on January 4th. The funds are supposed to be used for the “support and training for sexual minorities.”

The torture started off with a press statement issued by a Minister indicating the government’s opposition to the grant which they feel will be used for promoting homosexuality which is viewed to be illegal by the law of Cameroon.

This was followed by the issuance of a fatwa from the Coalition of Cameroonian Youth, highly dramatized protests and use of abusive language against Nkom and the group by representatives of the Communications Ministry and the Bar Association of Cameroon, which were even telecasted in the state Television, long lines of police cars parked outside the group’s offices for long hours, and Minister of External Relations Henri Eyebe Ayissi’s allegedly forcing the EU to revoke the grant with immediate effect.
