On the day of the 7th of December that is commemorated as the Pearl Harbor Day a goup of experts who were asked to judge the designs that were submitted for an energy efficient hanger. Out of the designs that were submitted the judges decided that the best one was the one furnished by a group of students from New York Institute of Technology ( NYIT) and the decision was announced from the historic USS Intrepid.

 

The team compised of 11 students , all graduating from New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) in Old Westbury.

They came from across different disciplines including architecture, engineering, education and pre-med and they were announced as the prize winners of the $3,000 that had been set aside as the prize money.

They will also be granted the privilege of providing a permanent design to the aircraft carrier which came into existence in 1943.

The design that got the honor comprises of five descending tiers each of which signifies the five kamikaze attacks which the vessel was subject to during the course of the Second World War.

The design also comprises of structures made of steel and glass that include green energy sources by means of wind turbines and solar panels. The design has provided separate enclosures for aircraft renovation, educational projects and leased projects.

The team members will start their project in syngery with subject experts and museum staff in January 2011.

Katerina Skiadas is a senior student of NYIT and is due to secure a Bachelor of Science in Childhood Education with specialization in Mathematics. She also has a degree from The Wheatley School, Old Westbury, which she completed in 2007. She has undergone a pivotal role in the team and has single handedly set up a curriculum to educate students about the importance of renewable energy and to solidify the foundations of constructing energy friendly buildings.

 

The ultimate goal of the unit is to demonstrate the versatility of renewable energy in the students’ daily lives, and create an enjoyable premise for future technological and scientific innovations,” Katerina said.

Katerina is also a member of the Presidential Honor List, Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society, and Golden Key Honor Society.
