Aimé Esso Nyame, head of Finance Service at the Nkondengui Central Prison along with three more of his colleagues will be subject to legal examination for allegedly helping Patrice Nkolo to run away from prison.

On Monday 18th October 2010, a prison official, Esso Nyame and three other individuals were asked to appear before the Magistrate Court in Yaounde.

The charges leveled against them involved active involvement and planning in the break away of Patrice Nkolo from the Nkondengui Central Prison. The convict was held under detention at the Nkondengui central prison.

The incident had happened a month ago on September 23, 2010. Aimé Esso Nyame and Michel Chala, two of Nkolos accomplices and Alyne Afouba, wife of Patrice Nkolo the convict who fled from prison who was also accused, were detained and questioned in detail by the investigating officers following the jailbreak.

However Bienvenue Megne Ayissi, the fourth in the accused list, was seen nowhere in the picture. All the four who were accused had pleaded that they were not guilty.

“My client is not guilty of the charges leveled against him because he had been in service at the Central Prison of Kondengui for two weeks following his recent transfer to the service. He should be released given the fact that he is a civil servant. He will go back to work” said Barrister Issaka, lawyer to Aimé Nyame while also pleading the judge to suspend the case.

Barrister Claude Assamba, who appeared on behalf of Aline Afouba also demanded the same and the freedom of his client. “Alyne Merveille Afouba is a mother of four children, she cannot remain in detention, she has to take care of her children,” he added.

The State prosecutor was however of the opinion that they four should be also imprisoned because they were suspected to be behind the jailbreak. He also stated that the release could create further problems since neither of them had their certificates of residence.

The judge after hearing both sides came to the conclusion that that the accused must not be treated differently and rejected the pleas for release. The hearing has been postponed to November 15, 2010.
