200 new members were elected to the Chamber of Agriculture, Fisheries, Livestock and Forests of Cameroon (CAPEF) in Yaounde on Wednesday October 13, 2010.

The new blood is readying to expertly manage the growing pangs of inadequate food and lack of security that the country is presently facing. The mandates of the 200 new bies were authorized at the first complete session of the Chamber that was held in Yaounde yesterday.

Addressing the chamber while doing the honor of chairing the meeting Vice Prime Minister, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Jean Nkuete said that he is hopeful that the new team if 200 will set the pace for activities that will seek a new dawn and adequately manage the trials and tribulations that the agricultural sector of the country is presently facing.

Following the economic recession of the eighties the once robust agriculture sector plummeted and has never seen revival since then. The Vice President was hopeful that the new team would be able to contribute towards the revival of the sector.

Speaking to the new comers he said, “Your election marks an important step in the revival of the chamber to ensure agricultural productivity as well as boost the development of the rural sector,” Jean Nkuete said. The other speakers also chose to agree with the Vice President on the synchronization between the members and other stakeholders to reduce food import despite the immense scope of domestic production.

The Secretary General of the Chamber, Dr. Nwana Bernard, selected the 200 members comprising agriculture with 88 members, fisheries 24, livestock 44 and forestry and wildlife with 44 members, who were chosen on behalf of the farmers. They are expected to uphold the stakes of farmers, safeguard them and to act on their behalf in making important decisions in organizations , educate them on the best methods to handle their trade and represent them in seminars and agricultural forums both domestically and internationally.

The expansion of the team from 60 members previously to 200 today indicates the priority that the Head of State holds for agriculture in his vision about the growth of the country.
