Government aid positively impacts Cameroons Coffee Industry

Following active participation and funding from the Cameroon government in tune with the radically changing industry basics, coffee industry is indicating an upward impetus.

A refreshing change to the dismal outputs in 2009-10 the cocoa industry has produced an outstanding yield this year. Expecting the growth to sustain industry experts believe that this year and the following one will be a ripe period for cocoa and coffee yields in the country. The latest set of government regulations has restructured the sugar cane sector which has also registered considerable growth.

The agriculture sector of the country is being impacted positively by more funding both from private and public sectors, enhanced industry basics and improved macroeconomic factors. This growth is also expected to show its influences in output if staple grains like corn and sorghum in the coming years.

Key Industry Forecasts

  1. - Following a 3.5% year-on-year decrease in 2009-10 a positive growth trend is expected for cocoa ranging at about 3.6 percent increase increasing the total yield to 222000 tonnes. Stringent measures are being taken to thoroughly investigate the causes for the reduced output in the previous year and take corrective action and the forecasts look promising.
  2. - There is also 9.1% y-o-y increase anticipated for sugarcane output. Based on the previous statistics sugar production is expected to increase at an average rate of 12.2% which is expected to be fuelled by more funding.
  3. - There is also an anticipated increase in demand for sugar and predictions are that there will be at least a 6.8 percent increase in 2010 and can increase to 15.7 percent by 2014.
  4. - The coffee industry remains pretty much the same and by 2010 the numbers are expected to peak by 2.6 % which will improve to as high as 27.8 % by 2014 a proof of the novel measures adopted by the government.
  5. - There is an anticipated increase of 8.6% yo- y rise in corn production.

 

Industry Developments

The government has deployed many strategies to peak production following a detailed analysis of the causative factors for the drop in the previous years. The various factors have been analyzed in detail remedial measure undertaken.

 

The BMI feels that there is hope in future for the cocoa production in the country which is being amply supported huge investments and innumerable reforms and regulations. The farming community is also being supported with high output seeds and top grade fertilizers at reduced rates.

As far as the coffee industry goes the government has planned to set aside XAF25bn (US$51.3mn) to reach it target of 2mn bags by 2015. The money is being directed towards enhancing production, reinstating defective estates and improving subsidies for seeds and fertilizers. BY producing high quality coffee the government aims to improve the life of the large farming community whose major source of revenue lies in these estates.
