Gang violence is now becoming rampant in the business capital of Cameroon, Douala which has affected the lives of many citizens of neighborhoods in Douala.
Ndjasso Pierre, a 45-year old resident of a recognized neighborhood in Douala, New Bell, revealed that regular gang violence begun when one of the members of the armed group was charged of harassing citizens and was killed by a crowd of people.
Pierre further stated that the armed gangs before were attacking in groups of seven or eight, but now are targeting residents inside their homes in groups of larger numbers.
The armed groups indicate that they will continue to attack using fire and guns made locally, knives and machetes.
The governor of the Littoral region of Cameroon, Samuel Dieudonne Ivaha Diboua, declared that a number of people have been killed and hundreds were wounded. Hundreds have been captured by the military assigned to protect the citizens.
Apparently, New Bell and nearby affected Douala neighborhoods will not anymore be at the mercy of the armed gangs. Diboua encourage people who have knowledge about the group of traffickers supplying drugs to the armed gangs should relate to them that the military is serious and will have no mercy when it initiates the organization of spontaneous raids.
The population of Douala is about three million and the majority of which are unemployed young people. Uncertainty has always been rampant in the city with broad daylight physical attacks, but this is the only time that armed gangs are in battle with the military.
The military are responding effectively to recent gang violence in Douala and are firm in providing security and protection to the local residents. The residents are also cooperative in discussions on how to prevent gang violence in their neighborhood among themselves.
