Catholic Church in Cameroon Invited to Join Fight Against Corruption

Yaounde, Cameroon Africa. (Cameroon News) – The Vice Chairman of Cameroon’s anti-corruption institution, National Anti-corruption Commission (NACC) has invited the Catholic Church to effectively contribute in the ongoing fight against the corruption scourge in the country.

Reverend Pastor Dieudonné Massi Gams met with bishops of the Catholic Church in Cameroon last weekend during their plenary general assembly meeting at the John XXIII Centre in Mvolyé, Yaounde.

“More than 60 percent of the population of Cameroon is made up of Christians. How then do we understand that the country is highly hit by the corruption scourge?” Dieudonneé Massi Gams asked the bishops.

He used the meeting to present to the bishops what the Commission had achieved, its plan of action and to equally to see how the Catholic Church could contribute in eradicating the corruption cankerworm in the country.

This is because, “The Catholic Church is a key actor in promoting moral values and has always denounced acts of corruption”, the Vice Chairman of the National Anti-corruption Commission explained.

The Archbishop of Yaounde, Victor Tonye Bakot during the April 2010 East message condemned corruption practised in may aspects of Cameroon’s national ranging from the judiciary, education and business, stating that the church could not be indifferent.

In the coming weekend, the Vice Chairman of the National Anti-corruption Commission will met officials of the Muslim and Protestant denominations in Cameroon to solicit their contribution in the fight against corruption.

On October 21, 2010, the country’s National Strategy for the Fight Against Corruption was validated in Yaounde. The vision of the strategy is that, “By 2015, Cameroon is a country where integrity constitutes an essential value for every citizen, with an economic growth equitably distributed to ensure social welfare of all in a preserved environment”, Dieudonneé Massi Gams said during the validation ceremony.

The strategy he said, brings in a common understanding and greater harmony in the fight against corruption and “ the roles of all actors involved in this crusade are better defined so as to ensure synergy, avoid duplication of activities, conflicts and waste of resources”, explained.

The German Non-governmental Organisation, Transparency International in two consecutive reports classified Cameroon as the most corrupt country in the world.

All the anti-corruption actors in the country are fighting to erase the stain, make Cameroon credible in order to attract foreign investors.
