It is positioned as an open online platform that will undertake distribution, information and networking websites via an accessible one-stop-portal.

The Mokolo collective will launch the project in tandem with the Durban Film Mart and will host three separate events on Friday, 22 July:

14h00 – 15h30: Mokolo participates in the panel African Initiatives

16h00 – 17h30: Mokolo presentation and discussion

17h30 – 18h30: Mokolo Cocktail

The main agenda behind Mokolo’s launch in Durban is to the showcase the campaign for their counterparts in the film and TV industries, and to lure in future potential partners and platform subscribers.

The idea of putting in place an online platform for African film practitioners and film lovers was inspired by a broader vision of intra- and cross border interaction. The concept was conceived in late 2010 when a plethora of experts got together for a discussion arranged by the Goethe-Institut in Yaoundé, Cameroon, and the synergy became stronger as the discussions furthered into a second meeting in Burkina Faso in 2011.

Through entering into synergies with present networking and distribution websites (content providers) the Mokolo platform aims to provide superior access to these sites by turning into an additional point of access under the umbrella of a one-stop African brand. Mokolo is not looking at turning into a data creator or storage vehicle, nor is it looking at becoming a content distributor or vendor, but will permit users to undertake numerous functions of partners’ websites (eg. search, edit and view content) from one single platform. Mokolo’s partners continue to be independent at all times and will man their own web sites as has always been the practice.

Mokolo’s mission is to foster networking between African industry experts and their European counterparts by putting in place an industry exchange portal (MOKOLO CONNECT), and to facilitate the distribution of African film by way of a distribution portal that will provide access to African film and TV products by bringing together multiple suppliers of video-on-demand services and other distribution models (MOKOLO DISTRIB).

Mokolo’s vision is to empower the African audiovisual industries, ass value to a condusive production climate by providing better accessibility to African audiovisual industries and content without giving direct competition to present websites for data pertaining to the industry and transfer. It looks at becoming an omnipresent and dynamic virtual marketplace for promoting exchange and trade, just like its counterparts.

The Mokolo Core Group is actually a cooperation arrangement between a multitude of organisations and film and TV practitioners who come in with a lot of expertise and experience from the various gamut of film and TV businesses in Africa and Europe, bringing with them an enormous data storehouse, Africultures and the video-on-demand online store AfricaFilms.TV.

The Goethe-Institut as the project initiator would be primarily aiding the Mokolo initiative and giving it basic financial and administrative support during its setting up phase. As soon as a structure is set up with a concrete base and starts functioning normally, Mokolo will move out independently to morph into a self-sustained industry owned pan-African structure.

Film making and television businesses at the current rate of growth will provide a lot of scope both financially and technically in the years to come. More initiatives of this kind are required to bring into focus the achievements and the progress made by the African film industry which has been out of the visibility range of international cinema.

Cameroon Business News: Mokolo African Online Platform Synergizes With Durban Film Mart is a post from: News Cameroon-Today.com
Pin It

Cameroon Music Corporation – Odile Ngaska Re-elected Board Chair of Cameroon Music Corporation

Entertainment

Featured

World News

Yaounde

Cameroon Music Corporation

Odile Ngaska

Cameroon Music Corporation - Odile Ngaska Re-elected Board Chair of Cameroon Music Corporation. Now Kodak the world’s biggest film stock producer is making a deliberate move to grab a chunky share of the market in this upcoming movie industry.

It has just entered into a contract that has recruited the International Film and Broadcast Academy Lagos manned by film maker Victor Okhai as the reseller for Ghana, Cameroon and Nigeria. The deal also comprises of a package deal that includes stock, processing and telecine at the kodak film labs in Dubai at steal rates that is a deliberate move intended to rope in more and more filmmakers into migrating from video to film.

Kodak had also arranged a lavish party for major African film makers. The private get together that was arranged in a luxury yacht at the film festival in Cannes last year was a prelude to their making an entry into the Afriucan movie industry.. The meeting which had the Managing director of the Nigeria Film Corporation, Afolabi Adesanya, Executive Secretary of the Lagos State video censors board, Dapo awobotu, the Lagos state commissioner for Tourism and Intergovernmental Affairs, Fadipe Ashamu, as well as movie makers like Mahmood Ali Balogun, Kunle Afolayan, Madu Chikwendu, and Victor Okhai among others was just an excuse for them to familiarize with the who’s who of African movie business.

The latest development is anticipated to bring in more advertisements, musical videos, movies and documentaries to be shot on film thus enhancing the production value and marketability of productions from these countries.

Cameroon Entertainment News: Kodak Moves In To Africa is a post from: News Cameroon-Today.com
Pin It

Cameroon Entertainment News: CRTV To Start New Programs

Entertainment

Featured

Yaounde

cameroon radio television

crtv

Television-Cameroon: CRTV is gearing up to start off a whole lot of fresh programmes. Cameroon Entertainment News: CRTV To Start New Programs Cameroon News
Cameroon Entertainment News: CRTV To Start New Programs is a post from: News Cameroon-Today.com

Cameroon Radion Television CRTV

Yaounde, Cameroon Africa.( Cameroon News) – Television-Cameroon: CRTV is gearing up to start off a whole lot of fresh programmes.

Cameroon Radio and Television Corporation is getting ready to start new programmes. The General Manager of CRTV yesterday revealed that the state TV would be starting of a number of “must watch” productions. It looks as though the Cameroon Radio and Television Corporation (CRTV), which is generally referred to as the “heart of the nation” is gearing up to keep its audiences glued to their TV set as they get ready with a whole lot of programmes that will alter the face of the channel. The revelations made by the top brass of CRTV indicate that the programs would be custom made to meet the audience’s desires. The General Manager (GM) of CRTV, Amadou Vamoulke was announcing the inauguration of the new programme season of his corporation for this year on May 7, in Maroua in a lunch that was arranged for the press in Yaounde yesterday.

According to Amadou Vamoulke, the changes in the programmes will not involve just some minor changes in the names, but will see a whole new approach and a radical change of content. The headings of many of the programmes may create the impression of “déja entendu” but the GM opines that there is more to decipher. This is applicable mostly because the changed programmes will see a major makeover especially as the new programmes will be of improved standards directed towards satisfying the hunger of the Cameroonian as well as the global population on news, entertainment and sports.

At the press conference, Amadou Vamoulke stated that the new programme season is not just a chance for CRTV’s audience to familiarize themselves with the new vision of the corporation. The new vision upholds service, while also giving due consideration to the hopes of Cameroonians ,by providing each citizen the notion, that he/she is important to the cause of nation building, through programmes which will help them to be one with their cultures and traditions.

In between the live TV show in Maroua, on May 7, to commemorate the flag off of the new programme season, the audience will be given a taste of the changes which will end with CRTV as a meeting point, where the cultural values and traditions of Cameroonians from all walks of life are given equal importance.

Some of the new radio programmes are “Que dit la loi?” “Les chemins de la foi”, “Espace International”, “Cameroon Yesterday and Today”, “Kids Forum” and “Regard”. Rumors are that “Que dit la Loi” will be entirely changed from how it used to be previously with the title “Le point du Droit”. ”

Cameroon Yesterday and Today” will go beyond sensitizing the local population about their roots and where they are going to, to providing the audience the civic education they are on the lookout for. “Kids Forum” is a programme for children that will be conceptualized and presented by children. (Cameroon News) – Singer Lapiro de Mbanga freed from prison following a three year sentence this Friday.

Singer Lapiro de Mbanga was freed from New Bell Prison in Douala on Friday 8 April 2011 at 2 pm after a three years prison sentence under torturous conditions.

The release was supposed to be on Saturday morning, but when the press called him to find out what his feelings about getting freedom after three years of rigorous imprisonment he revealed the good news.

“I have two news for you. A good one and a bad one. Which one do you want to hear? The bad one is that I will not released tomorrow. The good news is that I’m already out of prison now,” he said, with a loud laugh.

Lapiro de Mbanga : Confusion

Local media and friends of Lapiro had a lot of surprises in store for the singer to celebrate the grand occasion of his release.

The release prior to the scheduled time was not announced previously and there was a lot of confusion following the release in the local media.

There were also false stories plashed all over that said that Lapiro de Mbanga was just being transferred to a prison in Lapiro’s home town, Mbanga.

Lapiro de Mbanga, however, confirmed that the news of his freedom from prison was indeed true through a phone call at around 16:10 pm.

Lapiro de Mbanga : Is still not safe

Marie Korpe, Freemuse Executive Director, said:

“We celebrate with Lapiro and his family. We’ve worked for his release for almost three years in collaboration with many good colleagues and sister organisations. But we will continue to observe closely what happens to Lapiro de Mbanga. We know that he may still face security problems and we hope that we will be able to retain his career as soon as possible”

Lapiro de Mbanga : Followed closely internationally

The singer faced a prison sentence for a controversial song that he had sung to protest against the policies of the Biya regime called ‘Constipated Constitution’. Lapiro’s case has been an object of surveillance amongst the international audience and last year a petition was given to the UN for arbitrary detention.

Freemuse has synergized with Freedom Now, International Pen, Mondomix and his guitar provider Vigier Guitars.

Lapiro de Mbanga had received the Freedom to Create Prize in 2009. He took the prize when Freemuse visited him in Cameroon on Music Freedom Day 3 March 2011.

Singer Lapiro de Mbanga freed from prison following a three year sentence this Friday. is a post from: News Cameroon-Today.com
Pin It

Cameroonian Photographers Excel In Karachi

Entertainment

Featured

World News

Yaounde

CAMEROON

Cameroon Arts

Cameroon business

Cameroon Culture

Cameroonian Photographers Excel In Karachi Cameroonian Photographers Excel In Karachi Cameroon News
Cameroonian Photographers Excel In Karachi is a post from: News Cameroon-Today.com

Yaounde, Cameroon Africa. (Cameroon News) – Artists from Cameroon were shining par excellence at the exhibition ‘Imagining Cities: A South-South Dialogue’ held at the Amin Gulgee Gallery in Karachi.

If you want to take out a list of displays where expectations go skyrocketing and you get blown over by the beauty of not just the painting but the idea behind it then you would have to say that this one has definitely got to be in it.

The city of Karachi was graced by the golden chance to have hosted such an exhibition and Monday night here was lit up by an overwhelming display of three core mediums of photography, light and sound where connoisseurs of beauty had the time of their life viewing the majestic display improved and enriched by new media at the exhibition ‘Imagining Cities: A South-South Dialogue’ held at the Amin Gulgee Gallery.

The exhibition showcased the talent of an eclectic combo of artistes that comprised of both famous as well as upcoming artists from Pakistan and around 20 artists who had flown in all the way to Karachi from Africa. There were around 50 of them in all 30 from Pakistan and 20 from Africa.

The exhibition was conceptualized out of the synergy between Space for Pan African Research and Knowledge (SPARCK) and the Amin Gulgee gallery, and from the very first display showcased it was a treat for the eye and the mind.

Clay lamps that were lit up to lead the guests from the doorway to the first piece of art lent an air of serenity to the whole exhibition and there was visual exhibit with its dancing silhouettes light at the entrance which was where the tour starts off.

A point-of-view (POV) visual of riding a bicycle seemed so ethereal but that was just an indicator of the visual treat that was to follow.

The theme of the exhibition was a walk into the depths of the urban cultures of the South and the photographs displayed literally forces the viewer to think as they offer brief yet vivid portrayals of life in a metropolis where it is showcased in both groups and in isolation providing the viewer a chance to look at the objects and images that the urban life is comprised of in a totally different light.

The photographs went out of the way to remind the viewer of the commonness as well as similar issues that cities and city dwellers face right from Karachi to Kampala and the pieces of art that best exploited the endless possibilities of the new age media left the audience truly speechless in wonder. Visual depictions, short descriptions, installations, transient architecture, projections, et al were not just mesmerizing but also though provoking as far as setting up a South-South dialogue goes.

Similar to the metros that are in a continuous process of development and change the photographs also carried a breath of life in them almost as if they were flesh and blood transporting the viewer into a totally different world moving them through a kaleidoscope of emotions, feelings and sensations.

The photographs while capturing the images seemed to have also captures the life in those minutes that showcased the cities and the people who live in them, in a bid to explore the traditions, practices and culture that weaves the social framework on which these cities and societies rest.

Some of the remarkable pieces on display were the throngs of joy that gives you a real feel of Fun-Land and takes you back to your days of being an innocent child that was showcased in Madhia Aijaz’s (Karachi, Pakistan) animation ‘Belong’ or the deep sense of exhilaration that only sports fans can feel depicted in the video ‘ZakiFoot’ by Doktorose who had come in all the way from Douala, Cameroon indicated that the exhibition was not just about fun and happiness.

Yet another exhibit from Cameroon that caught the eye of the viewers and gained tremendous appreciation was the ‘Fire’ by artist Malam Essoua (Douala, Cameroon) who had portrayed the more serious and not so nice aspects of survival.

Imagining Cities is an outcome of a venture that aims at showcasing unknown artists from faraway lands , and the exhibition put up in Karachi is their first stop in a tour that will see the exhibiting visiting much bigger and prominent cities of the world like Sharjah, Los Angeles, and Paris among a host of other cities.

It is also to be noted that SPARCK follows a principle of not accepting any money from the artists who showcase their works in their exhibition be it in the form of commission or percentage from the sale of their exhibits.

Their only motive is to provide these lesser known artists a venue where their work can be displayed to secure world-wide appreciation and recognition while taking care not to lose out on the sustainability of their initiative. At present, the Africa Centre is offering them just about assistance to convene such events, be it on a bare minimum spending.

This is making it increasingly important that more organizations and individuals come forward and provide this highly innovative social organization a helping hand, as the venture that it has currently flagged off deserves special mention and importance since it could be used to play a very important role in developing the future of our societies.

Artists from lesser known countries of Africa are also getting a chance to showcase their talents in the biggest cities of the world which is definitely an opportunity they should not forsake.

Cameroonian Photographers Excel In Karachi is a post from: News Cameroon-Today.com
Pin It

‘BYZANTINE’ TO BE DISPLAYED IN CAMEROON AFRICA.

Entertainment

Featured

World News

Yaounde

CAMEROON

Cameroon government

US Embassy Yaounde Cameroon

The painting ‘Byzantine’ will be displayed in the home of the proposed U.S. Ambassador to Cameroon, Africa. ‘BYZANTINE’ TO BE DISPLAYED IN CAMEROON AFRICA. January 2011. (Cameroon News) – The painting ‘Byzantine’ will be displayed in the home of the proposed U.S. Ambassador to Cameroon, Africa.

Six high school kids along with an in-house artist were extremely busy during the two months of the summer of 2009 working together to create a huge abstract painting.
The beautiful work of art which is titled ‘Byzantine’ will now adorn the walls of the palatial home of the proposed U.S. Ambassador to Cameroon, Africa.

The painting ‘Byzantine’ will be displayed in the walls of the Yaounde residence of the ambassador Robert P. Jackson throughout the length of his stay there, which commences on Friday, Sept. 30, 2011.

‘Byzantine’ was initiated as an integral part of the Blue Sky Project. The program aims at building a synergy or collaboration between the youth and a competent artist who will stay in house and interact with the youth.

The program operates out of UD since 2009 and the details are available at the website BlueSkyDayton.

“What excites me about Blue Sky is how quickly our model has resonated with artists from around the world, as international artists now comprise about 15 percent of our applicants,” said Peter Benkendorf, Blue Sky’s executive director and founder.

The founder says that there is a sense of exhilaration in him when he sees the enthusiasm associated with Blue Sky’s work with UD.

“To be able to partner with an institution like the University of Dayton, which shares the same values of community and collaboration, has opened up a whole new sea of possibilities for the program and the participants,” he said.

There are a lot of prominent names associated with the painting ‘Byzantine’ and one amongst them is the artist in residence, Washington D.C.-based Katherine Mann.
‘Byzantine ‘ is a mammoth sized painting that is based out of a concept.

The painting has mostly used acrylics and has also employed screen printing to a large scale. The painting has been conceptualized to combine varied ideas about building abstracts.

“We would go take walks around the local parks and the campus, and I would tell the kids to reflect abstractly on the nature we saw,” she said. “Working with students made the piece really unique and gave it a little piece of richness.”

Mann feels that the painting is a good representation of the city of Dayton, the sprawling campus of the University awhile also indicating the individual emotions of the artists involved since these are essentially the locales and the feeling that are echoed by the vibrant tones of the acrylic.

“It was a really fun experience, and the entire process was really exciting and enjoyable,” she said.

The painting that was completed in May has been on display at the Dayton International Airport since May 2010. Following that the piece of art was selected by the U.S. State Department’s ART in Embassies Program.

Numerous painting as well as other pieces of art had been submitted to the U.S. State Department’s ART in Embassies registry for approval. These also included numerous works of art by the artist in residence herself.

“I believe this piece was selected because it has so many different voices integrated into it, and that’s what makes it so special,” she said.

The ART in Embassies Program was set up way back in 1964 and aims at exhibiting valuable and picturesque art from galleries, museums, individual artist, as well as corporate and private collections.

“I am now going to be serving as an ambassador of American art to the rest of the world, and it is something I am proud of,” Mann said.

‘BYZANTINE’ TO BE DISPLAYED IN CAMEROON AFRICA. is a post from: News Cameroon-Today.com
Pin It

Construction Contract Given To French Company Coyne et Bellier For Cameroon Lom Pangar Hydro-Electric HYDEL Project.

Business

Edea

Entertainment

Kribi

World News

CAMEROON

Cameroon government

Cameroon Resources

Construction Contract Given To French Company Coyne et Bellier For Cameroon Lom Pangar Hydro-Electric HYDEL Project. Construction Contract Given To French Company Coyne et Bellier For Cameroon Lom Pangar Hydro-Electric HYDEL Project. January 2011. (Cameroon News) – The television in Cameroon has gone a long way from the days when it was a toddler to now come out in flying colors.

What started off as a meek start off in 1085 is not emerging out to be a strong presence in Cameroon. Yes we are talking about the Idiot Box here and the makeover it has got itself in the span of twenty five years which can be more or less called as the history of television in Cameroon.

In spite of the territorial coverage still being a tad less the progress has been quite good, However there is still much more to be achieved when it is compared to the tremendous strides that television broadcasting has made by many of its African counterparts.

When you jog down the memory lane you would be surprised to find that the picture of the not so smooth start up of the first name and still the oldest in the television business in Cameroon which is the government run CTV (Cameroon Television) is still vivid in the minds of every Cameroonian.

Cameroon Radion Television CRTV

The history of Television in the country predominantly can be categorized into three stages namely the throttling kick off of CTV as a” unit” in march 1985, its conversion into an office followed by the massive set up which is called today as CRTV.

There was no one to compete and the state owned television giant was very much a monopoly till the time the President of the Republic decided to liberalize the Television business opening up the prospect of private players moving into the television broadcasting business.

The decision followed a huge boom in the television segment and also a relatively strong impact on the people of the country.

Most Cameroonians would get nostalgic about the beginning of Television broadcasting in the country. Between the fifteen years that spanned from1985 to 2000 the state owned television network had been a solo player in the business in Cameroon. Ardent fans of the Idiot box would sit for long hours almost turning themselves into couch potatoes to watch the programs that CRTV aired for hours together.

Eric Chinje, Akwanka Joe Ndifor, Charles Ndongo, Denise Epote, Julius Wamey, Willy Niba and Njovens Ben Berka used to be the topics of discussion and the apple of the eye of every Cameroonian. Most people were still wonder struck and could not believe what the televisions were showing them right in front of their own eyes.

You had to rush to get a choice seat in front of the neighborhood TV screen because there was always a huge crown in front of the gadget. Teenagers in anticipation of catching their favorite programs were known to leave their homes and ignore day to day activities including studies.

People would somehow manage to get a glimpse of their favorite shows even if it meant that they had to look at it through their neighbor’s window panes. The popular programs were also different and entertaining such as “Minute by minute” , “Province à la une”, “Dynasty” or “Isaura”

MUSLIM RADIO LAUNCH IN CAMEROON

People were just after the State TV and institutional news always occupied center stage in the broadcasts. Politicians and social organizations were willing to go to any lengths to get themselves seem on television and to have their operations followed. There is a very amusing story related to the television in Cameroon that if the TV crew did not get to the venue on time the entire program would be repeated just so that it could be aired on television.

However all these activities that the televisions was involved in was centered mostly in Cameroon’s major cities like Yaounde, Douala, Bafoussam, Buea, Garoua and Ngaoundere. The rural population could only have glances of TV when they came into the cities.

Once the television sector was liberalized in 2000 with a decision from the President to permit private ownership, the TV in itself got itself a massive makeover. The first to emerge were Canal 2 and STV who initially used their cameras just to get pictures of the beautiful landscape of Cameroon. The views were so enthralling that they did not even need a commentary to keep the viewer engrossed.

There was also a migration from elitism to popularism. Gone were the days when the TV camera was seen only at political and elite gatherings.

More and more of the local communities started involving TV and used the facility to express themselves.

With time more and more new names popped up and the list just grew with Equinoxe, DBS, LTM and so on. Cable distributors also took h best advantage of the situation bringing in over 70 channels into the country like CNN, BBC, Al Jazeera, TFI, CFI, France 24, NTA, etc.

But there is still one major block to overcome- territorial coverage. Although TV has created a long lasting impact in most sectors like fashion, culture, politics, business, sports and has been able to really influence the psyche, territorial coverage is still lagging behind what is actually required.

The TV signal is still very weak in the borders and this has been a cause of a lot of heated debates in the circles that discuss development issues. Politicians in the opposition and the ruling party use this as their prized weapons when it comes to gaining personal ends and for political negotiations. And this has found to work out to their best advantage many times.

The youth have used it as a weapon to indicate that there is still a very wide gap between the urban and rural in the country. And the general public seems to feel that the government has just chosen to ignore these areas and feel deprived of a major tool which if used well could be deployed to untie the nation and to uphold its spirit.

If areas in Idenau, Akwaya, Bakassi, Lebialem, Ndian and Kupe Muanenguba have been itching for better coverage and more clear signals, it is being proven again and again that the better the TV coverage is the more bliss and peace and development the people in the regions enjoy. This is indicative of the fact that the television is playing an important role in the upliftment of the people and in keeping them in tune with the changing times.

The poor availability of national TV signals even in such politically sensitive areas of Cameroon as Bakassi or Idenau has also not been working well for the country and its government as well as its peace condition because people in these areas are still heavily dependant on foreign news bureaus and stations for information and many times the information that they provide are highly misleading and deceptive leading to further issues.

In short it is important that the government realizes the power that television wields and the influence it provides since it is a mirror of the country in its own right and still hold the power to influence the minds and thinking of the people to a great extent.

The technical stipulation of the media is completed with the radio and TV broadcasts and the newspapers reviews. It has been proven time and time again that all the three are string influencers and Cameroon is no exception to the rule.

TELEVISION EVOLVES FROM WEAK TO STRONG IN CAMEROON AFRICA. is a post from: News Cameroon-Today.com
Pin It
