Counterfeit banknotes to the tune of a million euros were taken into custody from a Cameroonian national.

Two foreigners hailing from Rwanda and Cameroon, both 27 years of age, were taken into police custody on Friday by Athens security police after forged 50 euros notes amounting to a sum of 1 million euros were found on their person.

The two men after questioning took the police to an apartment in Galatsi, which they had converted into a temporary counterfeiting laboratory.

In the apartment, police could find out a total of 1,115,190 euros in forged banknotes of 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 euro denominations, and an additional 40,000 dollars in counterfeit banknotes of 50 and 100 dollar denominations. The entire apartment was cordoned and the notes confiscated following the raid.

The search also revealed state of the art printers, huge rolls of isometric paper which had been trimmed into banknote size, eight glass containers containing chemicals that are employed for the processing of bills, shredding equipment and three cell phones. All of these were also confiscated as proof for the counterfeiting operation.

The two men are supposed to be produced on Saturday before a public prosecutor wherein they would be charged with multiple cases of money forgery.
