Yaounde, Cameroon Africa(Cameroon News) – The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon will be playing an international friendly match against Russia in June. <!–dsensestart?
At a press conference that was held during the first half of this month month, Indomitable Lions coach Javier Clemente announced that the team will be having an international friendly game against Russia on June 7.
The announcement regarding the match was made by the secretary general of the Cameroon football federation (Fecafoot) Tombi A Roko Sidiki.
The match is scheduled to be held just three days after Cameroon takes on Senegal once again in yet another important battle on June 4. Tombi Sidiki revealed that the match against Russia has been fixed to replace the friendly against Gabon in France that had to be cancelled. The match against Gabon was called off at the last minute, without any explanations, after Cameroon’s 0-1 defeat in Dakar against the Teranga Lions.
This was just one among the other problems that Clemente had to furnish explanations for to both the Cameroonian and international media in the press conference in Yaounde. According to the Head Coach, the team will be flying to Russia from Cameroon immediately after its match against Senegal which is to take place in Yaounde. They will make a brief halt in France and then Austria before travelling to Russia. According to the team officials, including assistant coaches Francois Omam Biyik and Jacques Songo’o, the match will be giving them an opportunity to appraise and examine players who have so far not been too prominent in their club sides.
Cameroon and Russia have had two stints with each other previously at the final stages of the World Cup; first in 1990 in Italy and then in 1994 in USA. In both games, Russia has been defeated the Lions. Cameroon got a 4-0 battle against Russia in 1990 and got a 6-1 victory in 1994. The match will give them a real kick, as Russia recently secured the bid to host the World Cup.
