Preparations are heating up in Cameroon for the celebration of President Paul Biya’s twenty eighth (28th) year in office as Head of State of the Republic Cameroon, Africa. The celebrations are to take place on Saturday November 6th 2010, exactly 28 years from November 6th 1982 when President Paul Biya took over office.
On November 6th 1982, the then President and Head of State of the United Republic of Cameroon, President Ahmadou Ahidjo voluntarily resigned from his post and in a surprise & shocking move handed over the offices of Head of Sate to Mr. Paul Biya.
The celebrations are spearheaded by the ruling party officials – the Cameroon People Democratic Movement (CPDM) led by President Paul Biya. In a smart move, the CPDM officials have also used the occasion to launch nationwide support for President Paul Biya’s 2011 re-election presidential campaign to serve Cameroon for the next seven (7) years in office as president and Head of State.
One of the major achievements credited to President Paul Biya is the pursuit of regional peace and security in the central African region, especially his peaceful handling of the volatile Bakassi Peninsula dispute with neighboring Nigeria. Also notable was his skillful use of Cameroon position on the United Nations (UN) security council to re-institute major diplomatic accords between Washington and Yaounde while granting support for the US led Iraq war.
Major critics of President Paul Biya’s 28 years in office has had to do with the deteriorating economic conditions flourishing in Cameroon, Africa. With so small a population and so much natural resources, many find it very difficult to explain the non-stop downward movement of the economic conditions in Cameroon since the 1980s.
Also of major significance is the constant corruption at all levels of the Cameroonian society – at both the public and private sectors.
Such brazen corruption has created and fostered an environment very difficult for entrepreneurial activities in Cameroon, Africa.
