Bamenda, Cameroon, Africa. (Cameroon News) – The governor of the Northwest Region has assured dental surgeons that the government of Cameroon will always support them in their fight against some clandestine practices in their profession.
Governor Lele Lafrique Adolphe was speaking in Bamenda today while chairing the opening ceremony of the general assembly of the Cameroon Order of Dental Surgeons in Bamenda.
According to the National Order of Dental Surgeons there is one dental surgeon in Cameroon for 105,000 people, far from the World Health Organization standard of one dental surgeon for 10,000 people.
Many of them are found in the big cities making it difficult for many citizens especially the rural masses to know about their profession.
Also, some members of the Order of Dental Surgeons are not well versed with the internal regulation and other text regulating the practice of their professions.
It is as a result of these and other reasons that their profession has been invaded by charlatans with many professionals, even though belonging to the order, operating clandestinely.
The focus of this general assembly is to redress the situation hence the theme Ignorance of the Law is no Excuse.
While imploring the government to support them in their fight against disuse, the President of the Council of the National Order of Dental Surgeons Dr. Effila Ebe Catherine mentioned the construction of their headquarters in Yaoundé and the closure of some clandestine dental clinics in Douala are some of their achievement within just one year in office.
Northwest Governor Lele Lafrique Adolphe assured the dental surgeons of government’s continued support in their fight to rid their profession of charlatans and clandestine doctors.
Created in 1984, the Cameroon National Order of Dental Surgeons now has a membership of over 178 doctors.
The Bamenda general assembly meeting is expected to end next Saturday, October 28 with far-reaching resolutions geared towards resolving the problems faced by the order.
