President Jonathan said that Nigeria would be validating the mixed commission agreement they signed with Cameroon with respect to border issues.
President Goodluck Jonathan said on Tuesday that Nigeria would be putting in place a committee to review the draft agreement that they finalized with at the recent session of the Cameroon-Nigeria Mixed Commission for validation.
Jonathan indicated this when he had a meeting with the Cameroonian Deputy Prime Minister, Alhaji Amadou Ali, who got a special communication from President Paul Biya.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) states that the deal involves the consensus that was finalized on the exploitation of hydro-carbons that lie along the border of Nigeria and Cameroon.
The President said that once the committee’s assignment is completed, the document would be agreed upon by both the leaders. Jonathan also said it was important for the two countries to synergize together to look into the operations of criminals along the border.
He indicated that it would be important to also rope in other countries who share common borders with the two nations, since “criminals don’t respect borders’’.
Jonathan said Nigeria and Cameroon “are one people, separated by artificial boundaries’’.
He said that Nigeria was attuned to preserving the human rights of people on either side of the border, as well as fostering friendly ties with Cameroon.
Previously, Ali had sent across an exclusive message and a draft of the agreement finalized at the Cameroon-Nigeria Mixed Commission to President Jonathan.
He said his country was in robust contact with important Nigerian authorities, with special consideration on security concerns.
