Yaounde, Cameroon Africa(Cameroon News) – UC RUSAL is extremely interested in Cameroon bauxite.

Russia’s biggest mining company; UC RUSAL is looking out for an opportunity to invest in Cameroon as it gets ready to diversify its sources of bauxite.

Mr Yakov Itskov director of RUSAL’s international division indicated that a new government and a spate of mining reforms in Guinea, where RUSAL had some large scale operations, are inhibiting investment options and forcing them to look for greener pastures elsewhere.

Mr Itskov was addressing reporters in Cameroon after the company and the government synergized to form a joint working group to delve into other investments in core areas like energy and infrastructure projects.

He said that Cameroon is grabbing the interest of RUSAL because it has got rich reserves of bauxite, the essential raw material for the production of alumina and aluminum.

RUSAL which had been in operations in Guinea for a long time now, have been always involved with various arguments with trade unions and government and is looking at a country where the political scenario is favorable for investment and Cameroon offers just that with Biya being in power for almost three decades now and the government opening all doors to investments.

Mr Itskov said that the new government spear headed by Alpha Conde could create some major amendments of laws that govern bauxite mining and development. All this may negatively affect the investment climate there. RUSAL realizes how important the economic and political stability of a country is crucial to the bauxite industry development and is looking at every avenue to expand its resource base while also keeping its options open for new partners and alternative raw material sources.
