The bright pictures of the presidential visit to the provinces in the North West pats of the country are still fresh in the minds of the world.
News reports indicated that the massive population of the North West had all assembled together to offer the President a very warm welcome and went out of the way to ensure that his stay there was comfortable and free of hassles of any sort.
In fact the political and social climate of the region was shown to be so promising that most of the critics of the region had almost believed that all was well there and the conditions had actually altered. The North West was showcased as a region of brotherhood and congeniality and there was not even the remotest hint of any disturbances in the region.
But the recent stories and reports pertaining to the region do not even remotely indicate anything similar and they go out of the way to prove that the issues that had been once affecting the region adversely have started coming back in full force.
The residents of Bambalang and Balikumbat are once again at loggerheads with each other and waiting for the slightest excuse to lung at each others throats.
This is definitely not a case of some mild misunderstanding between the two provinces which if was what was happening would have definitely come out into the open and a solution determined for sure. If that was the actual case then there was also no cause for worries of any sort.
But the huge list of casualities that have been reported in the area coupled with mass demolition of residences, huge farmhouses and domestic animals do not indicate that there is peace of any sort here but on the other hand indicates that the public display of affection that had been shown was just fake and carried no depth.
During the course of the Presidential visit to the North West Provinces just a couple of months ago ,which are presently warring each other, the fons of the two fondoms, who can barely stand the sight if each other had been photographed excessively as wining and dining and enjoying the hospitality of the President.
They had been summoned to numerous sessions at the Bamenda Congress hall and they had diligently marked their attendance in all of them and had spoken to each other in several pre and post visit meetings, but presently are staying away from any sort of public appearances while just sitting back and letting their clan battle each other with all their might.
Inter-village conflicts have been one of the major sources of socio-economic concern of the North West since many years now and the government on their part have been making regular and sincere efforts to battle their dislike for each other and trying to manage the conflict as much as possible but have sadly been unable to provide any long lasting solutions.
The steps that are generally taken to curb the enmity between battling villages from far appear quite feasible and applaud able but when you take a closer look you would be able to find that regular repetition of these attacks have made it increasingly important to take necessary measure to revamp the whole thing.
These acts of prevention have been negatively affected by a whole lot of factors, the most important of which is the similar type of response in situations that have occurred previously and a lack of decision making skills and focus in specifically addressing what is generally taken as criminal behavior and for which it is becoming increasingly important that specific laws be put in place.
Regular observation of what has been happening so far will reveal that justice has very often been late which is promoting the people who perform these despicable acts of violence almost giving them a free license to repeat it again and again without fear of punishment.
It is quite difficult to imagine that people who had previously co existed without any serious issues would suddenly want to wage war with each other or exhibit the most bestial form of violence all for a menial chunk of land.
It just seems to enforce the belief that the people of North West no longer fear the law. The people who had once upon a time been proud upholders of the laws of the land and respected the constitution of the country have turned the corner and now have scant respect for the same laws.
The total lack of strictness in similar situations that had arisen in the regions previously are primarily responsible for the attitude that these people have adopted towards the laws now.
The State by way of the legal and judicial system makes sure that it gets its due from politicians, and unless and until a firm stop is put to such practices such incidents are bound to be on an increase and will continue to cast its dark shadows on the people who had proven in the recent past that they are indeed willing to change themselves and cooperate with the President of the Republic and his regime in his struggle to convert Cameroon into a place worthy of praise and appreciation from all levels.
The complacency with which the security agencies of the country view the situation is also too shocking to digest. Most people would anticipate that these derogatory acts of violence would come under the purview of the concerned authorities and would expect them to take firm and immediate action on people indulging in such acts.
The public authorities may be anticipating support in terms of resolution; but ordinary people too need to express an opinion and they definitely have a right to do so.
The new world is a globalized one and the people of the NW are no exceptions. The village or “fondom” concept is still too oppressing and is in some way a causative factor for the total lack of tolerance.
The globalization principle cannot be ignored as just a mere cliché. The crux of the idea is to realize that the world is shrinking in size and moving fast towards becoming one and this idea has o be driven into the minds of the residents of the North West.
An ideal example is that of the “ring road” project. The project is anticipated to connect around 100 communities who share no sort of common interest whatsoever.
The concept of “village” is an itself a total antithesis to the whole concept of the “ring road” which is being set up with the aim of interconnecting villages, and, in the process, settle differences of any sort.
The resident of the NW should from now on realize understand that the exigencies of globalization and the setting up of a united country is demanding that we cannot be demanding for trans-NW roads, a university or a regional referral hospital while simultaneously struggling and battling to promote the setting up of different villages with such strength and focus.
If these facilities are to be out in place, the price will come in the form of curbing of such violent acts which is causing a lot of bloodshed and creating a lot of doubts in the minds of people and the government and the people who conceived the idea as to whether there is real need for such amenities in the region and as to whether they would really be in a position to handle them. These primitive acts, which don’t quite connect with a new-found tolerant and civilized political climate, must definitely stop.
