Cameroon’s Presidential Candidates Begin Depositing Files

Yaounde, Cameroon Africa. (Cameroon News) – Over 13 candidates planning to run for October 9,2011 presidential election in Cameroon, have deposited their files with the elections governing institution, Elections Cameroon (ELECAM).

Cameroon Radio Television (CRTV) reports say 10 candidates today, September 2, 2011 deposited their files at the General Directorate of Elections in the institutions head office in Yaounde, two candidates in the economic capital city, Douala and one in the North West Regional capital, Bamenda.

Some of the major candidates who deposited their files in Yaounde include Barrister Bernard Muna, the candidate of the Alliance of Progressive Forces (APF), Kah Wallah, the candidate of Cameroon People’s Party and Fritz Ngoh, of the Ecological Movement.

Anicet Ekani candidate of the MANIDEM party deposited his file at the Littoral Regional Delegation of ELECAM in Douala, as well as Albert Nzongang.
The other candidates will have to rush as in conformity with the electoral law, they have up to Sunday, September 4, 2011 to deposit their files.

The Director General of Elections in ELECAM, Mohaman Sani Tanimou, in a release in Yaounde said ELECAM Regional Delegations and the head office in Yaounde, will be opened on Saturday, September 3 and Sunday September 4 for candidates to deposit their files.

“The file of President Paul Biya, the candidate of the Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (CPDM), will be deposited latest Sunday, September 4, 2011,” the Assistant Secretary General of the CPDM Central Committee, Gregoire Owona said in a press interview in Yaounde.

Following the CPDM constitution, the Chairman of the party is automatically its presidential candidate. The CPDM third ordinary elective congress will take place on September 15 and 16 during the party chairman will be elected. Mr Biya for now is the chairman and the party’s constitutional provision has to be respected.

The leading opposition Social Democratic Front (SDF) will hold its National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Bamenda on Saturday, September 3. “During the meeting, we will examine the files of all potential candidates contending for the post of the SDF presidential candidate”, the Secretary General of the SDF, Dr Elizabeth Tamajong said in Yaounde.

“In the SDF constitution, there is a clause which states that all members of the National Executive Committee can sit and select the presidential candidate in case of an emergency and the convention will ratify it,” Dr Tamajong further explained. The SDF is planning an elective convention this year.

The Central Committee of Maigari Bello Bouba’s National Union for Democracy and Progress (NUDP), the third biggest political party in Cameroon, will meet in Yaounde on September 3 to take a decision with regard to the October 9, 2011 presidential poll.

NUDP voted for incumbent President Paul Biya in the 2004 presidential election and later on formed a coalition government with the ruling CPDM.
