Yaounde, Cameroon Africa. (Cameroon News) – The lone power supply corporation in Cameroon, AES SONEL, has invested over FCFA 400 billion in the electricity sector between 2001 and 2010, leading to an increase by 20 percent of power generation in the country, the General Manager of the corporation, Jean David Bile said in Douala on Monday, September 5, 2011.
Today, there is an installed generation capacity of 933 megawatts, with 721 megawatts being hydroelectric and 212 megawatts thermal; with a transmission network of 480 km, Mr Bile said in a press conference that marked the 10th anniversary celebration of AES-SONEL head office in the Koumassi neighbourhood of Douala.
He further disclosed that of the approximately 522,000 customers, about 79 per cent are said to be resident in Douala and Yaounde.
AES-SONEL plans to restore, in a sustainable way, equilibrium between energy supply and demand by increasing the generation capacity, ensure the reliability of the network and increase the efficiency of transformers and continue to facilitate access to electricity to the greatest number of customers by granting them attractive connection and subscription conditions, the General Manager stated.
