A high level delegation of the CPDM party will be taking part at the eight national convention of the opposition Social Democratic Front in Bamenda from tomorrow the 12th to October 14.
The delegation to be led by the Deputy Secretary General Gregoire Owona was designated by the secretariat of the ruling party following an invitation to the National President of the party Paul Biya from the National Chairman of the SDF Ni John Fru Ndi to attend the convention.
The CPDM-SDF public exhibition may just be a new sign of collaboration in the horizon.
The vets of the ruling CPDM party and the opposition SDF in Bamenda in the early 80’s and 90’s respectively gave room to public appreciation of the first and condemnation of the second mindful of the strenuous circumstances under which the ceremonies took place.
Since then public opinion has been that the two may never eyeball to eyeball because of their hard political stance about national issues. The first, wanting at all cost to retain power; while the second, will stop at nothing to grab it.
Many attempts to mend fences through negotiations and dialogues did not bear any fruits with pundits concluding that the political stalemate was to be blamed on both sides which have decided to take the country hostage. It took the time it has taken but at last the political maturity of the two parties has given the country a new political configuration.
Militants and supporters had sworn that Paul Biya and Ni John Fru Ndi will never shake hands. They had thought that Fru Ndi will enter the Unity Palace only when he will take power.
Unfortunately they all had it wrong.
It started in Bamenda on the 10th of December 2010 during the 50th anniversary celebration of the defense forces when Paul Biya received Fru Ndi in audience, both men shaking hands firmly.
Less than a month after, Ni John Fru Ndi was at the Unity Palace leading the SDF delegation to New Year wishes ceremony to the president of the republic.
Today it is an invitation to the National President of the ruling CPDM party from SDF National Chairman to attend the eight convention of the green and white party.
This was very unthinkable but the policy of appeasement based on dialogue preached by both leaders has superseded the confrontational determination of their militants and the high level CPDM delegation to be led by Gregoire Owona Deputy Secretary General of the party, the first in the history of both sides, just comes to confirm the adage that political opponents are not necessarily enemies but only have a divergence in their political opinions.
Hopefully that this new found ground of friendship may just be signs of more collaboration as the years pass by.
In the build up to the eight national convention of the Social Democratic Front a rally is currently going on at the Bamenda Municipal Stadium and this will be followed by cultural evening at the Bamenda Congress Hall.
