AFCON – Cameroon, Burkina Faso Into Last Eight

Cameroon and Burkina Faso entered into the last eight on Sunday.
After a draw with Cameroon, Gabon was in anguish. At the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Sunday, the Panthers were ousted of the competition’s group-stage level.
Star player Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang made a conspicuous early miss while Denis Bouanga hit the post and cried out of frustration. These caused the Panthers to a third draw and out of the game.
Even if the Panthers ended the group level unbeaten, the team became the fourth host country and the first after Tunisia in 1994 to be removed in the group level from the Cup of Nations.
On the contrary, Cameroon despite of the withdrawals of their main players has built-up and was included to the last eight as Group A’s runners-up.
Burkina Faso won over Guinea-Bissau in a 2-0 victory in the other game at Franceville.
Panthers had a 1-1 draw against two tournament debutants Burkina Faso and Guinea-Bissau despite Aubameyang scoring during the opening games.
But, the striker of Borussia Dortmund had a magnificent chance at the Stade de I’Amite during the fourth minute by having the ball open at the back post with the goal break open after an engaging Bouanga cross.
Bouanga was Gabon’s most creative player and was greatly unlucky not to steal a 94th-minute winner as his shot hit the post before Fabrice Ondoa turned over Didier Ndong’s follow-up.
Bouanga received his man of the match prize in tears. On the other hand, Coach Jose Antonio Camacho who was appointed to the job on the last minute blamed bad luck for the fate of his team.
Camacho stated that he is sorry for the team and the fans. They were determined to win but football is not fair, he said further, referring to the last-gasp miss. He ended by saying that it is too far-flung to talk about the future and that they are unhappy for not going through.
Aubameyang Proud of Players
Striker Aubameyang lamented on an insufficient build-up to the competition which included a late start for the training camp.
He said that he is proud of all the players because everyone gave their very best.
He added that he thought that their team was stronger that all other teams in the group. But it was not easy, the change of coach and the preparation played crucial part.
Apparently, Cameroon move forward to the last eight and a quarterfinal tie opposite Senegal in Franceville next Saturday.
The victory against Guinea-Bissau brought Burkina Faso remain in the competition. Guinea-Bissau did not have any win in their first appearance at the Cup of Nations.
Burkina’s lead in Franceville was attributed to the own-goal on 11 minutes of Rudinilson Silva.
Through the 57th-minute strike of Bertrand Traore, Paule Duarte’s side ensured the win during the second half of the game.
Burkina Faso can now anticipate to a last-eight tie despite losing Jonathan Pitroipa due to an injury next weekend against the runners-up from Group B.
The runners up in Group B will be determined on Monday after Algeria face Senegal in Franceville and Tunisia face Zimbabwe in Libreville.
Tunisia is seen to go through as runners-up than Senegal, While Algeria even with the presence of Riyad Mahrez, the African Footballer of the Year, must win and hope that Tunisia loses in order for them to go through.
Algeria defender Djamel Mesbah said that their chances of winning is slim but it is when they are down and need a little push to get out of a catastrophe that they become strong.
