Ending its long 15-year wait, Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions is the champion of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Cameroon’s preparation for the play-offs itself was challenging. With eight of the country’s star players rejecting Coach Hugo Broos’ call up to the team, Indomitable Lions still proved to be the best.
The country’s star players include Joel Matip and Eric Choupo-Moting who chose the European leagues over 2017 AFCON must be now feeling sorry and envious as their countrymen get hold of the AFCON trophy.
The Indomitable Lions was the team that everybody thought would not have a chance of winning and a team short of experience and quality.
But the faithful players answered Coach Broos’ call, came to Gabon and truly wanted to play for Cameroon, desired to wear their team’s shirt and do the best to make their country proud.
During an interview after the championship, Coach Broos told reporters that there were numerous problems before they came to Gabon. Players who would not want to join the team. He said that it is okay since it was the decision of the players who are now probably cursing themselves why they didn’t join the Indomitable Lions.
Broos further declared that he does not have 23 players, but he has 23 friends. Within the weeks, they went from being a team to becoming a family. He can’t believe what the players did, but it was incredible.
The sound of voices inside Libreville’s Stade d’Angondje was vociferous as the whole Cameroon bench left their places and joined Aboubakar to cheer in front of an ocean of green shirts.
Egypt fall short to find the leap forward and Cameroon was not to be denied. The Lions now tops Africa for a fifth time and will host AFCON in two year’s time as defending champion.
